Occupational Therapy (OT)
Serves families with children birth-19 years of age, who have questions about their child’s development.
Families choose whether to receive services at their home, at the Family Connection Centre, Park Centre, or an alternative location. There is no fee for this service.
OTs work closely with families and collaborate with the multidisciplinary therapy team and community partners. OTs assist in developing skills and approaches that help families to enhance their child’s development. Did you know that a child’s occupation is PLAY?
Our Occupational Therapists are required to be registered members of the College of Occupational Therapist of British Columbia.
OTs assess a child’s development and may offer:
- Direct therapy
- Consultation regarding ways to reach family’s goals
- Information
- Referral and/or liaison with other services (local community
or provincial) as appropriate
- Co-ordination of services
- Assistance with transitions throughout the years (daycare, elementary school, high school)
OTs can help your child with:
- Play
- Regulation/sensory processing
- Adaptive equipment: wheelchairs, walkers, beds, overhead lift systems
- Self-help skills: feeding, dressing
- Motor skills: holding/moving small objects etc.
A child may be seen by an OT when they have:
- Fine motor difficulties (e.g. manipulating small objects…)
- Feeding/swallowing difficulties
- Difficulty focusing on one activity
- A medical diagnosis that affects the child’s overall development (e.g. Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delay…)
- Sensory processing challenges (e.g. sensitivity to noise, touch, foods..)
- Difficulties with self care (e.g. feeding, dressing, toileting, sleeping…)
